I'm thrilled to see these still on the market. The one I installed nine years ago is still working fine but I know that it will probably need replacing soon. They've made it so much easier than getting on a ladder every 6 months to replace a 9 volt!

First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital Display

First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Plug-In Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital Display

  • Plug-in carbon monoxide alarm with battery back-up and digital display
  • Uses electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor--the most accurate technology available
  • Simple to use silence/test button
  • Low battery warning; end-of-life timer
  • Includes 2 AA batteries; 5 year limited warranty

Amazon.com Product Description

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert CO615 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet. Its easy-to-read backlit digital LED display gives you a clear read-out of current CO concentrations in parts per million. The alarm includes a battery back-up giving you peace of mind in a power outage. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. An audible and visual low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and an indicator alerts you when a battery has been removed. An end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. One 9-volt battery is included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. --Bree Norlander
What's in the Box
One carbon monoxide alarm, one 9-volt battery, and user's manual

We bought this to supplement our Kidde Nighthawk CO detectors, the 900-0234 curved model with a 7-year warranty (we didn't want to put all our eggs in one basket!). The First Alert looks to be a fine CO detector.

Here are some positives:

1) It has the plug on a wire, so that you can put the detector somewhere other than right in the outlet. That's helpful as outlets can have other adapters in them making it hard to plug it in or be behind something rendering the CO detection harder.

2) It can be tested or silenced with a remote (hold down the volume or channel button for 5 seconds) (our Tivo remote worked!). (Some of their other products with the remote features have received critical reviews as regular remote operation has set them off!)

3) Operates on AC with a battery backup (2 AAs)

4) Batteries ARE included!!

Here are several negatives:

1) 5-year warranty unlike the Kidde's 7-year.

2) A "manual" that's a huge, cumbersome, folded sheet, with small print that's blurry and hard to read. They should supply a magnifying glass with it! This is a major concern as one needs to refer to the text for installation, for operation, to determine what to do under certain conditions, etc.

3) Yes, one can park the detector on a bookshelf (with the cord going to the outlet), but the detector itself wobbles! The previous Kidde CO detector Nighthawk model--the COPP-3 -- has the plug on a cord feature, along with a nifty slide out stand that makes it stable. (We had good luck with that model, but many did not. Plus, it's an older model, with only a 5-year warranty which is why we went for the 900-0234).

4) The CO level only shows up if one presses a button. It's a cool blue light, but unlike the Nighthawk's red LED that shows you the current CO level at all times (a reassuring 0), this displays a blank screen with a recessed green light. For some, it could be a plus as it would be less intrusive especially as the Kidde's red LED seems to be much brighter on their latest model.

5) The detector displays a battery icon when it's plugged into AC and the battery back up is installed! That's unnerving as it makes it seem as if it's running on the battery! Very odd design choice!

6) The test alarm didn't seem as loud as the Kidde's.

7) Battery cover is the front of the device, which the manual didn't explain or illustrate, and it doesn't shut well--or rather, it's awkward and you feel as if you're about to break the lightweight plastic parts.

8) One other issue, which plagues all the CO detectors and many other products on the market, is the infuriating, hard plastic packaging. It's hard to open and I even cut myself on it. There are alternatives that are just as secure but much friendlier to the environment and the customer!

In comparing the two (Kidde Nighthawk 900-0234 and the First Alert CO615), the advantage clearly goes to the Kidde. It just seems a more professional, better designed, and better thought out product. Part of that is because we're used to the Kidde design and like the red LED, but it also seems more solid (the First Alert has the seemingly fragile/flimsy cover), and has a higher quality, usable manual--it's a real booklet that's more readable and better organized (it also has a bigger font than FA's, but still could be larger).

I ordered and received this item timely from Amazon. The product was well packaged and the directions for use were easy to follow. The product is nicely constructed, easy to use, and seems to work well. I like the fact I can push one of the buttons located on the front of the unit to see if the unit has picked up any CO levels from the area it is located. It is designed to plug into a wall electrical outlet and also has a battery backup. The unit is small and appears out of the way when it is plugged in and being used. So far, the two units I bought are working well so I give this product a rating of 5 stars.

Update: Jan. 14, 2011 - I have now owned two of these devices for over two years and each one is still working just fine. I have had to replace the back up battery on each just once a year, which is fairly standard, so the devices seem to be well built and last.

First Alert SA511CN2-3ST ONELINK Wireless Battery Operated Smoke Alarm with Voice Location, 2-Pack

First Alert SA511CN2-3ST ONELINK Wireless Battery Operated Smoke Alarm with Voice Location, 2-Pack

  • First Alert ONELINK battery operated smoke alarm with voice location
  • Uses photoelectric sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier
  • Simple to use silence/test button
  • Low battery warning and convenient pullout battery drawer
  • Comes with a 10 year warranty

From the Manufacturer

In the event of a fire every second counts. If a fire were to begin in your basement and the alarm there sounded, you may not hear it right away if you're sound asleep two floors up. With traditional battery-operated alarms, you lose valuable time waiting for the smoke to rise to another alarm, on another level, before the alarm on your floor sounds. But with First Alert ONELINK alarms, if one detects danger, they all sound. This can alert you sooner, and it increases your chances of getting out safely. Until now, alarms that could signal each other were only available in homes with hardwired alarms requiring installation from an electrician. But First Alert ONELINK alarms communicate without wires. ONE Link-with Voice Location Smoke alarm is programmable with up to 11 locations in your home - when alarm sounds it will tell you the location of the smoke. The wireless feature allows multiple alarms to talk to each other - when one alarm sounds, they all sound. The wireless network operates on 914 MHZ 3 channels and will not interfere with other electronics. The ONELINK smoke alarms uses photoelectric sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The AA batteries are easy to install in the convenient pullout battery drawer. Two AA batteries included.

WIRELS SMOKE/VOICE 2 PK

At about 2:30 one morning I awoke to the faint sound of a smoke alarm beeping in my infant daughters room. To my suprise neither my wife, nor my daughter were awaken by the contiunous high-pitch whine of the 5 dollar smoke detector. Honestly, I don't know how long it had been alarming before I awoke. Fortunately it was a false alarm triggerd by a humidifier.

A few short days later (prime shipping) my new First Alert OneLink units arrived - I'd suggest buying 6 for a good size house and to make sure they are all in range to set each other off. They work on a mesh-type network, so when one receives a signal from the alarming unit, it will re-transmit the alarm again so any units out of range of the first unit also get the signal to alarm. It works well.

Setup is simple and the included mounts make it easy to hang them on the wall or ceiling. The first time I pressed the test button I knew NOBODY was going to sleep through an alarm.

About 6 months later I was proven correct. Something triggered one of the units - naturally it was in the middle of the night when we were asleep. All of them starting alarming (and yelling "evacuate! evacuate! smoke in basement"). They are LOUD. I'd suggest setting them off when your spouse is asleep and watching their reaction. Have some clean undies for them to change into afterwards.

The same unit did false alarm a few more times, and First Alert was quick to send me a replacement... They didn't hassle me for the box, receipt, or make me go through hoops to get a replacement. The (obviously USA based) phone representative sent me out a new one asap. It was the best customer service I've experienced in a long time.

If you don't have hard-wired alarms in your house, get these... don't be cheap.

I have a multi story house and wanted more protection and to know if there is smoke on another floor. These comunicate very well, They are a little hard to set up, it took multiple times before we were able to get them to talk to each other.. Don't loose your instruction sheet! you have to do it every time you change batteries.

This review is from: First Alert SA304CN3 Smoke Alarm with Escape Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
Years ago, somewhere I bought a smoke detector with a built-in light (like this, in concept). Although (thankfully) we've never needed to rely on it, I liked that it was there, so when we needed to add a new detector, I looked for something similar. I chose this one partly based on the CR reviews of similar First Alert models, and partly based on availability and price here at Amazon.

The older detector has a pretty bright light when I test it, and I was expecting something similar when I ordered this one (the SA304CN3). Well, this one's light is rather small by comparison and didn't seem terribly bright during testing.

Like anybody shopping for such an item, I try to imagine possible scenarios. With no smoke, in a pitch black house, it would help, especially if the power is out. But one assumes there might be smoke, in which case the light's range would be more limited. So I don't think of it as "lighting the way out" all the way to the door.

Instead, I figure the presence of even this dim light in the haze might help you locate a stairwell (if you mount it there) which would get you that much closer to the exit. So, I'm thinking of it more like a small beacon than an actual lamp.

Other stuff: First Alert seems to have a problem writing clear instructions for mounting these things (I bought two different FA models). To their credit, they give good advice about where to place the detectors within the home. But after that, they gloss over the details of measuring and drilling holes for the supplied wallboard anchors and screws, and stuff that some people might need help with.

And while some obvious stuff is barely mentioned, they go to huge length about (for example) installing security pins in the base and the battery compartment. I'm wondering, who is buying these things for a private home and worrying so much about tampering? I was halfway through these laborious instructions before I saw the explanation that, if you don't have a security problem, you can skip all the business about the locking pins. Phew!

The self-test works as expected, and in two weeks of use, no false alarms so far. I realize that's not much feedback for shoppers hoping for longterm results, but I wanted to post this to describe the light feature, and the installation instructions. Also note, this is an ionization detector. For the most important spot (near the bedrooms) I installed a dual-technology detector First Alert SA302CN Double Sensor Battery-Powered Smoke and Fire Alarm, which has no light but which should react to any kind of fire or smoke. I figure, cover all the bases, which is how the lighted model fits in to the overall plan.

My personal bottom line for this one is that the installation is easy IF you have ever installed something on the wall of your home and figure it out. Drill two holes, screw on the base, and the detector slides easily onto the base. You have to make sure the battery goes into its holder in the right position, or the unit will not close up. I like that feature, after being a bit confused by it at first.

As for the light: I don't know if it will make a difference in a true fire/smoke emergency, but I like having it just in case. Presumably the light would drain battery slightly faster than the alarm alone, but not by much. That's probably why they didn't put a brigher lamp in it, so I would not worry about the alarm performance. Put it this way: if it detects a genuine fire emergency and goes off, you better be out of the house long before the alarm ever drains the battery...

Slight points off for the light being not quite as bright as I expected, and for the instructions needing a bit more clarification. Otherwise I'm happy with it.

Have had now for a year or so. Placed two of these near the stairs(upstairs and basement) in my home to help light the way out in a fire. Placed two others that work by a different mechanism beside these also. The one near the basement stairs has gone off twice due to my furnace needing to be cleaned and making some smoke. The other highly rated one beside it did not go off. (Furnace man is getting an F for effort). Seems to work well.

It's easy to install and inexpensive to buy. I've used this same brand for over twenty years, and this is my third purchase (they have a 10-year use). I suppose I could test it by burning something, but it's always worked whenever we burned food in/on the stove! As far as I know, the test button only tests the battery charge. What more can you ask of this device?

Normally I have had no problems with First Alert alarms; but the cover on this one was hard to remove, in order to mount it. The plastic ring was so thin that I was afraid if I forced it, it would break, finally after putting it aside a couple times to stop my frustration I was able to get it together ready to mount, which also seemed more awkward than other alarms I have put up, including another CO2/smoke alarm I purchased at the same time.
The good is the button to turn off the alarm for smoky kitchens and also the use of regular batteries rather than having to hunt down more expensive lithium ones.

Our old smoke detectors used to go off every time we broil a steak - which can make the house a bit smoky. These don't false when cooking. We have two. There is a mute button. Mounting is easy with the removable mounting plate. A+. Uses one 9v battery. Off brand battery included

This review is from: First Alert SA710CN Smoke Alarm with Photoelectric Sensor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have owned this for 6 months or so. It works just fine, just like it should. I have it placed in my kitchen, so I was waiting for it to be going off all the time from steam, but it doesn't. It went off for the first time last night, a piece of popcorn dropped onto the burner and it smoked up and the alarm went off. Does the job!

This review is from: First Alert SA9120BCN Smoke Alarm Hardwire with Battery Backup (Tools & Home Improvement)
This smoke alarm uses ionization sensors and appears to be well made. It is easy to install with a screwdriver (and needle nose pliers if you use the optional locking features). Turn off the power to the circuit, attach the mounting base to the electrical junction box, connect the alarm's pigtail connector to the house wiring with 2 wire nuts and plug the connector into the alarm, and rotate the alarm into its mounting base. Then restore power and you should see the green power monitor light above the test button.

The instructions require a magnifying glass to read and the 9V battery is a tight fit.

The alarm can be wired to other alarms in the same residence, so one alarm triggers the others. Green monitor lamp to verify power. Chirps when the 9V backup battery gets low. 85-decibel alarm. First Alert doesn't list this product on their website - either too new or discontinued? Has 10 year limited warranty.

There are only minutes to escape a house fire. The sooner you hear the smoke alarm, the sooner you can get out safely. Kidde interconnected Ionization smoke alarms provide early warning against fire by linking together the smoke alarms in your home, dramatically increasing your ability to hear an alarm anywhere, regardless of where the fire starts. This alarm is a 120V AC powered ionization smoke alarm with 9V battery back-up and Hush feature. This smoke alarm has the ability to function as a single unit or in an interconnected system. Install UL listed smoke alarms on every floor of your home, in hallways, inside bedrooms and outside of sleeping areas. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. The purpose of a smoke alarm is to alert you to a fire in your home. Thankfully I have never been able to test this unit, and I hope I never have the chance. So I'll just review the other reasons I bought this product.

I bought two of these units to replace older Kiddie model 1275 units that were malfunctioning and going off regularly for false alarms. My main concern was compatibility since I have 10 units in my house and did not want to replace them all. These new units used the same wiring, connectors, and mounting frames as the old units which was perfect -- installation took less than a minute per unit. The new units work with the old units perfectly -- pushing the test button on the new ones set off all the alarms in the house, just as they should.

I did have some hesitation about buying new Kiddie units since the old Kiddie units were malfunctioning. (To be fair, only one was malfunctioning, but I was tired of messing with troubleshooting and decided to replace the last two options.) However, only 1 in 10 of my existing units was malfunctioning, and they are 6 years old (out of a reported 10 year lifetime). The smoke alarms were installed when I bought the house, so I can't be sure the failing unit was not dropped or otherwise abused before installation. So far the new units have not produced any false alarms and are working well.

I needed to find a replacement for the older hard wired "Lifesaver"smoke detectors that were installed in my two 20 unit apartment buildings. It took me only 1 minute to punch out screw hole placement to existing set up. Rewired using the same set up and done. It works great and my tenants love the "Smart Hush" control to temporarily silence nuisance alarms. These will be my choice for all future replacements throughout each unit as needed.

  • Ionization sensor which helps detect fast flaming fires that consume combustible materials rapidly.
  • 120-volt AC inter-connectable (with maximum 18 compatible devices). The alarm can be interconnected with up to 12 other compatible smoke alarms and six compatible devices like bells, horns, repeaters and door closers. If one unit triggers an alarm, all smoke alarms in the series will sound. Power indicators show which unit in the series initiated the alarm.
  • Latching alarm indicator which automatically identifies which unit initiated the alarm.
  • Smart technology to reduce nuisance alarms.
  • 9-volt battery backup for peace of mind during power malfunction.
  • Single test/silence button which both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality.
  • Perfect mount system including a gasketless base for easy installation and new mounting bracket that keeps the alarm secure over a wide rotation range to allow for perfect alignment.
  • Mounting bracket lock for tamper resistance.
  • Dust cover to keep unit clean during construction.
  • 10-year limited warranty.
All BRK Electronics smoke alarms meet UL 217 standard and are listed with the California State Fire Marshal. They use the new UL mandated repeating 85-decibel alarm horn pattern. 10-year limited warranty. This unit is approved for sale in Oregon after new revisions on law HB2586.--Bree Norlander

The install was easy. I replaced 8 units in about an hour. Most of the time was spent moving between floors and rooms. It's only been about a month but I have had no problems with these new units. Easy to install, no problems, what's not to like!!!!!!!!!

I replaced both my direct wired (no batteries) BRK alarms due to the fact that I noticed that they were labeled to be replaced after 10 years service in 2005 (moved into house in 2008) and didnt know about that until I got up on the ladder and looked at it as the alarm was going off randomly (yes, it was unfortunately going off for me at night). So, I yanked it from the plug, went back to sleep and later googled to find this particular BRK model replacement. I replaced both easily and so far no problems ----after 1 month service so we'll see.

This product was selected as a Best Buy by Consumer Reports based on value for your money. From what I can tell thus far they were spot on. The exterior looks like any other CO or smoke detector you might find in the hardware section of a store. The template and screws that are included make it extremely easy to mount. I especially like the LED display that tells you the current level of CO in ppm (parts per million) of the sampled air. There are other detectors out there that have some fancy talking alarms and other useless features but I don't think they're necessary. This CO monitor has everything a person should need for keeping track of the level of Carbon Monoxide in their house.

I'm reviewing the Kidde 900-0146-004 Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm. This unit was incredibly easy to set up straight out of the box. It's also easy to hang. And for those that do no wish to hang it up on a wall, it has a small "kick stand" in the back that enables it to stand by itself on a shelf. The unit is simple to use and has an LED that is easy to read. I'm very happy with this purchase.
